Shandong Sport University (SSU) is located at the foot of the Thousand Buddha Mountain，a scenic spot in Jinan，the capital city of Shangdong province of China. As the only institute of higher learning education involved in physical education, training, and scientific research in Shandong province, approved by the State Council，SSU has the qualification to confer the bachelor and master degrees and jointly cultivate students with Wuhan University of Technology．

SSU was established in 1958. In 2002, in the scenic coastal city of Rizhao in Shandong, a new branch campus was established. Now SSU covers an area of 125 hectares. The buildings for teaching total an area of 366,700 square metes. The equipment and apparatuses for teaching, training, and scientific research are worth of ￥31.2951 million. The library boasts a collection of 303,300 volumes of Chinese and foreign books as well as 537 kinds of periodicals.

Up to now, SSU has 1055 faculty, including 47 professors, research fellows and national level coaches as well as 256 associate professors, associate researchers and senior coaches. Among them, 13 have doctorate degrees; 59 have master degrees; two are supervisors for Ph D.candidates; 19 for master candidates; 7 are international level coaches; 24 are national level coaches; one is member of the physical education appraisal group of the degree committee of the State Council; 5 are prospective training candidates of the provincial level core of pace–setter in scientific of the mild–aged and young; 11enjoys are granted special allowance by the government; and 14 are national and provincial level outstanding teachers.

SSU offer eight specialties majors for bachelor degree, including Physical Education, Physical Training, National Traditional Sports, Social Sport, Human Body Science (sports), Public Affairs Management (sports), Dancing Science (sports), and Special Education (sports). In terms of postgraduate education, two specialties, including human body science concerning sport and training science of physical education, are offered. At present, the number of full-time students in SSU is 8,592.

The specialty of Science of the Human Body in Sport has been chosen as a provincial level key discipline. The simulated training laboratory under it is a provincial level key lab in Shandong. The laboratory of fundamental theory subjects is chosen as a provincial level grade one lab. Over the past five years, one textbook edited by SSU has been awarded the “national level prize for textbooks” five teaching achievements have been awarded provincial and ministerial level prizes; 41 achievements have been awarded the provincial department level prizes; and 36 discourses have been selected by some international institutions and conferences, such as the IOC World congress of Sports Science, Olympic Congress, and the Asian Conference on Sports Science.

From 2000 to 2003, on some international games, such as the Olympic Games and the World Championships, the athletes from SSU won 10 gold medals, eight silver medals, and eight bronze medals. On the Asian Games and Asian Championships, the athletes from SSU won 27 gold medals and eight silver medals. On the national games, the athletes from SSU won 70 gold medals.

SSU attaches great importance to international exchanges. Over the recent years, SSU has established relationship of friendly cooperation and academic communications with institutes of higher learning in the Unites Sates、France、Germany、South Korea、and so forth, More than 30 professors and coaches have been sent abroad for teaching and for many times, some international famous scholars have been invited to teach in SSU.

And present, with a view toward solidifying the foundation of athletic sports and meeting the demand of athletic talents of the society, SSU is grasping every opportunity for development. It is expected that the enrollment number of full-time student will exceed 10,000 by the year 2010 with a view to establishing new Shandong Sport University.
